History of Ambato

In the first months of 1895 Ambato contributed that the revolution becomes strong under the educations of an illustrious ambateño: Don Juan Montalvo. Another great liberal politician ambateño was don Juan Benigno Vela and in the conservative party, the illustrious politician, poet and writer Don Juan Leon Mera. Ambato is the city of three Juanes.

The Earthquakes

Ambato's seat was destroyed for and earthquake of the year of 1698 and the scanty survivors founded to new city of Ambato on the place where it is nowadays, after win to resistance of the Quisapinchas.

Along its history, Ambato and to Tungurahua's province they have suffered the scourge of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions both of the Cotopaxi and Tungurahua.

The most recent earthquake happened on August 5, 1949 that affected Ambato and produced Pelileo's destruction. The tragedy produced thousands of dead men, damaged and the destruction of housings, ways and buildings.
