During the reconstruction, local residents with the support of
foreign NGOs aimed their efforts towards more
sustainable development.
As a result in 1999 Bahia was
declared an ecological city, for which development activities
are being carried out with the purpose of a better use of its
resources, and for the conservation of the ecosystems. In
Bahia de Caraquez environment and ecological projects are
being made, the first certified shrimp farm in the world,
reforestation of the hillside, ecoclubs, reforestation of
mangroves, "Fanca Produce" recycling and productive garden
projects are some of the eco projects.
