Santa Cruz

Named after the Holy Cross, its English name was given after the British vessel bearing this name (H.M.S. Indefatigable).

It has an area of 986 km² and a maximum altitude of 864 meters.

Santa Cruz, the most frequently-visited island in the archipelago, is often described as the point of embarkation for any Galapagos journey.

Centrally located, it is only a short ferry ride away from the Baltra airstrip, the most common entry point to the islands.

Santa Cruz is the island that hosts the largest human population in the archipelago at the town of Puerto Ayora.
