Galapagos Sea Lion: (Zalophus
californianus wollebacki) The
Galapagos Sea Lion is the
largest animal found on land in the islands. The normal
population is around 50,000.
It can be found anywhere around the
islands.
Males or bull
sea
lions are easily distinguished from the females by their
larger size (up to 250 kg) and distinctive bump on the head.
Galapagos Fur Seal: (Arctocephatus
galapagoensis) The endemic
Galapagos Fur Seals are the
smallest of the world's seven fur seals species.
Males only
reach 65-80 kg in weight and females up to 27 kg. they are
seen less frequently than Sea Lions.
The
Fur Seals are smaller than the
Sea
Lions and have a much shorter snout.
They are best viewed
always on rocky coasts, never on sandy beaches. The best place
to see it is Puerto Egas (Santiago Island).
